A day in the life of a deputy isn’t slow, quiet, or predictable. It’s constant.

In 2015, Nye County dispatch handled 43,039 calls for service. That breaks down to about 118 calls per day across the county.

In 2025, that number jumped to 62,089 calls for service and roughly 170 calls per day.

That’s over 50 additional calls, every single day.

And here’s what that really means…

Those numbers aren’t just emergencies. They include 911 hang-ups, traffic stops, investigations, suspicious activity, welfare checks, extra patrol requests, and everything in between. Every one of those calls gets handled. Every one requires time, attention, and manpower.

Now consider this staffing levels have not kept pace with that increase.

So while the call volume has gone up significantly, the number of deputies handling those calls has not increased at the same rate.

That means fewer deputies answering more calls, covering more ground, and making more decisions under pressure.

This is the reality of policing in Nye County today.

When you see a deputy tied up on a call, understand there are dozens more waiting behind it. When response times feel longer, it’s not from lack of effort it’s from demand outpacing resources.

Our deputies continue to show up and handle it, day in and day out.

But the numbers don’t lie.

If you want to see more deputies in your community, your voice matters.

We encourage members of the public to get involved by attend County Commission (BOCC) meetings, speak during public comment, and communicate directly with your elected officials. Let them know that staffing levels and public safety are important to you.

Because ultimately, decisions about staffing and funding are made at that level and those decisions are influenced by the voices of the community.

Public safety is a shared responsibility. Your support makes a difference.
